Following a third-place finish in last year's renewal, Safe Passage has sat prominently in the 2023 Durban July betting throughout the season.

Winner of three Grade Twos and the Grade One Daily News 2000 at three, Safe Passage is yet to win during his four-year-old campaign. De Kock's Durban July contender did, however, finish a close second to Puerto Manzano in the lucrative Summer Cup and was last seen staying on to place fifth behind champion miler Charles Dickers in the Gold Challenge.

Another feather in Safe Passage's cap is the booking of Belgian jockey Christophe Soumillon. Soumillon is a multiple champion jockey in France and is no stranger to racing in South Africa, having ridden Golden Ducat in this year's Cape Town Met.

Safe Passage will wear the number 14 saddle cloth, having been placed in stall 14 when the draw was made and Soumillon will carry the blue and white silks of owner-breeder Drakenstein Stud.
