Last year's runner-up, Linebacker has been cut from 12/1 into 6/1 second-favouritism for the Durban July, after returning to form with a narrow second in the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge. Al Muthana beat Linebacker by a neck in that Group One, and he's been cut into 14/1. Jet Dark, who finished just a head behind Linebacker in third, is now a 12/1 shot.
Mike De Kock's Safe Passage jumped to the top of the betting following his two-length triumph in the Daily News 2000. Fellow three-year-old, Pomp And Power finished second as the odds-on favourite in that Group One, but Justin Snaith's Cape Derby winner remains the second-favourite.
Safe Passage's stablemate, the mare Sparkling Water fourth in the market, having placed in both the Empress Club Stakes and the Premier Champion Challenge. Former two-time Durban July winner, Do It Again also features prominently in the betting.
Last year's winner, Kommetdieding sits alongside Do It Again at 10/1. Hoedspruit and Aragosta can be backed at prices shorter than 20/1.
66/1 outsider Astrix edged out Sparkling Water to win the Premier Champions Challenge and Paul Peter's five-year-old can be backed at 40/1 with Hollywoodbets. Other names to note in the current betting include Puerto Manzano, Al Muthana, MK's Pride and another of Justin Snaith's former winner, Belgarion.
The final field for this year's Durban July will be revealed on Monday 20th July.
