Linebacker and War Of Athena were both cut in the 2021 Durban July betting, after claiming Grade Ones at Greyville on Saturday.
This year's Woolavington Stakes was billed as a two-horse race between War Of Athena and Princess Calla, with many anticipating a fantastic showdown.
As War Of Athena hit the front, the gap opened for Princess Calla, and the second favourite came there cruising. Yet, when push came to shove, War Of Athena found an extra gear, and the winner was going away from her rival on the run to the line.
War Of Athena was a 10/1 shot when the betting opened. After winning her second Grade One of the season, Paul Matchett's three-year-old is now a 6/1 shot.
The second Grade One on Greyville's card on Saturday was the Daily News 2000. Linebacker went off as the 11/10 favourite, and Grant Van Niekerk's mount didn't disappoint.
As the pacemakers made way turning for home, Linebacker powered into contention. Vaughan Marshall's three-year-old seemed to get a little lonely out in front, hanging towards the far rail, but still had more than enough left in the tank to claim a comfortable victory.

After following Linebacker home in the Daily News 2000, Rascallion was cut into 12/1 from 33s. Princess Calla, on the other hand, drifted right out to 33/1 in the latest Durban July betting.
