On Saturday July 3rd, 18 of South Africa's finest middle-distance horses will battle it out in the 2021 Durban July. The initial entries for this year's renewal of this lucrative handicap were announced earlier this week, and 43 horses remain in the running.
Here are the latest betting for the 2021 Durban July.
Justin Snaith celebrated his third Durban July victory in a row in 2020, as ante-post favourite Belgarion defeated Got The Greenlight and defending two-time champion, Do It Again.
Belgarion will attempt to defend his crown in 2021, but it's last year's runner-up, Got The Greenlight who tops the early betting, having won the Chestnut Stakes and the Premier Champions Challenge already this season.
Do It Again will return for his fourth crack at the Durban July, having won the race in 2018 and '19. Snaith had planned on running star three-year-old Jet Dark in this race too, but he was pulled from the entries this week, with Snaith fearing his youngster would be carrying too much weight.
Rainbow Bridge beat Belgarion in the Cape Town Met back in January, and he could make his third appearance in this handicap. Eric Sands could also run Golden Ducat, who finished two places ahead of Rainbow Bridge when fourth at Greyville in 2020.
Notable Durban July debutantes include Linebacker, who's won the Cape Derby and the World Betting Guineas this term. Politician Stakes winner Kommetdieding could also represent this year's three-year-old crop, while four-year-old filly War Of Athena travels to Greyville looking for her sixth victory in a row.
