Durban July Tips

The 2019 Durban July promises to be another high-quality feature at Greyville and it’s never too early to sort through the form.

Do It Again was too good for his rivals in 2018 and much like his name, we’re expecting the Justin Snaith-trained runner to do it again this July. The four-year-old was the victor in the 2018 Durban July and although repeat winners are hard to come by in South Africa’s biggest race, we’re confident he can show up again.

Justin Snaith lines up the son of Twice Over, which scored at odds of 9.00 in 2018 and will likely start shorter in the market this time around. Punters were able to get good odds for the talented type, given that he had previously run as the 2.35 favourite when running fourth in the Grade 1 Daily News 2000 behind Surcharge. He should be better prepared for the 2019 edition and he could run away with another Durban July win.

Secret Potion ran as a 51.00 chance in 2018 but that was only her third career start and she will be a much stronger chance in 2019. The Geoff Woodruff-trained filly was a winner on debut at Turffontein in the Grade 2 South African Oaks and that shows her class.  She was beaten in the Pinnacle Stakes second-up at Turffontein but she was a 17.00 chance and too much was expected of her then. With time to mature in the off-season, we believe Secret Potion could be one to watch in the Durban July.

Made to Conquer ran second in the 2018 Durban July before backing that up with a fifth in the Elan Gold Cup behind It’s My Turn. That grade form is going to stack up nicely for 2019 and bookmakers should be offering each way odds for the Snaith-trained runner, which ran as a 8.50 chance last season.

It’s tough to rule out any runner from this stable and Made to Conquer looks a natural selection for punters.

Durban July Betting Tips

We will have updated Durban July betting tips when the final-field is released.

Yakeen:

Mike De Kock has a tremendous record in the Durban July and he should have a good chance of winning the 2019 Durban July with Yakeen.

The four-year-old colt finished 14th in the 2018 Durban July but he will only improve with time and the Australian-bred son of Teofilo still has plenty of maturing to do.

Prior to his disappointing run in the 2018 Durban July, Yakeen won consecutive races at Turffontein and the rise in distance came too soon for the young type. He’ll be better for that experience and should provide punters with good value.

Abashiri:

Has the experience to contend in the 2019 Durban July and he’s one of our top SA horse racing tips.

The Azzie-trained six-year-old ran last of 18 winners in 2018 but that run was too bad to be true and we think Piere Strydom will stick with the gelding.

Strydom has won the Durban July on multiple occasions and his confidence in the son of Go Deputy is a positive for bettors.

He hasn’t won since 2016 but he’s got another campaign in store and he could offer bettors with some great betting value.

Dark Moon Rising:

11th in last year’s Durban July, Dark Moon Rising has since performed well in two subsequent starts. The Paul Lafferty-trained five-year-old finished sixth behind It’s My Turn before winning his next start.

That came in the Pinnacle Stakes at Greyville and having that winning experience on the track is going to help his chances.

He’s another runner that bookmakers should have as one of the potential Durban July winners.
