Durban July Winners Trends

See It Again has been superb this season and deservedly heads the market. However, only one of the last ten renewals of the Durban July has been won by the favourite, with the five winners since Belgarion’s triumph in 2020 returning a starting price between 8.00 and 17.00.

Younger horses have dominated the Durban July in recent years. Two-time winner El Picha was the last six-year-old to land this famous handicap back in 2000, while 21 of the last 25 winners were either three or four years old.

We will wait until the final field has been confirmed and the draw has been made before finalising our 2026 Durban July tips. The crucial draw will take place on Monday 22nd June.

For many years, a low draw was thought to be advantageous over this trip around Greyville. The Real Prince was drawn in stall five last year, while 2023 winner Winchester Mansion emerged from stall four.

That being said, five of the last ten Durban July winners were drawn in stall 11 or wider. Both Kommetdieding and Belgarion won from the two widest stalls, suggesting the draw may not be as important as many punters believe.

Early Durban July Tips

A week before the draw is made for the 2026 Durban July, the weights will be unveiled. See It Again is expected to head the weights, as he currently holds a merit rating of 130.

For 2026, the weights have been expanded by two kilos at both ends of the handicap, meaning See It Again would be set to carry 62kg, rather than the previous top weight of 60kg.

The new conditions should create a wider spread of weights across the 2026 Durban July field. It could also hand an even greater advantage to the three-year-olds, who already receive a useful weight allowance from the older horses.

Note To Self (8.00) was receiving several kilos from both Okavango and Eight On Eighteen when narrowly beaten by that pair in a conditions plate at Greyville last month. Andrew Fortune held his mount up that day, and Note To Self hung slightly left coming around the bend before finishing strongly to cross the line just half-a-length behind his two market rivals.

Justin Snaith’s improving three-year-old will receive even more weight from the older horses when he lines up in the Durban July. Note To Self should relish the step up in trip in the HDJ, and that previous experience around Greyville could prove invaluable on the big day.

DurbanJuly.com will publish its full 2026 Durban July tips, racecard analysis and betting predictions once the final declarations and draw have been confirmed later this month.
