2021 Durban July Result - Kommetdieding wins at Greyville

The eyes of the horse racing world were fixed on Greyville this afternoon, as the 2021 Durban July was played out.

Got The Greenlight finished second to Belgarion in the 2020 renewal of the July. Having won two Grade Ones on his last two start, Joe Soma's four-year-old had dominated the betting during the build-up to this year's main event.

However, on the morning of the race, support came for leading three-year-old Linebacker. Vaughan Marshall's star won the Daily News 2000 back in May, and by the time the stalls opened at Greyville, Linebacker went off as the 3/1 favourite.

As expected, Crown Towers went straight to the front. Shah Akhbar wasn't far behind, with Tristful moving forward to help make the pace from a wide draw.

Rainbow Bridge didn't start well from stall one and was held up on the rail. Got The Greenlight and Kommetdieding were held wide during the early stages, with Linebacker, Do It Again and Rascallion placed well in the midfield.

As the field turned for him, Kommetdieding and Linebacker were the first to attack the pacemakers. Got The Greenlight was carried widest of all, which was far from ideal, but Muzi Yeni soon settled into the drive.

Many wrote Kommetdieding off after being drawn in the widest stall of all, but it was he who finished off strongest, and Gavin Lerena's mount held on to deny Linebacker and the staying-on Got The Greenlight.

Do It Again came through to place fourth, ahead of the third three-year-old in the top five, Rascallion. Rainbow Bridge and Belgarion finished well outside the places.
