We bring you full details of the 2020 Durban July draw, as Justin Snaith’s duo of Belgarion and Do It Again were placed unfavorably in stalls 17 and 18.

Although social distancing rules meant no crowd was allowed into Hollywoodbets Greyville to witness the draw, there was still plenty of excitement the confirmed runners for this year’s Durban July were drawn into their allotted gates.

Justin Snaith has thrown five of his best horses into the mix, as he looks to land his fourth Durban July in the last four years. Belgarion has sat happily atop the betting since winning the Greyville 1900. Stable jockey, Richard Fourie has chosen to ride Belgarion again over his four stablemate, but Fourie and Snaith would have been very disappointed when the ante-post favourite was drawn 17 of 18.

Snaith's disappointment was compounded when his dual-Durban July winner, Do It Again followed his stablemate out of the hat, meaning he will come out of the widest stall of all. Do It Again will bid to become the first horse to win back-to-back-to-back Durban July’s on Saturday 25th, but his quest for a hat-trick was made even more difficult after the result of Wednesday’s draw.

A high draw is seen as a huge negative in the Durban July. Yet, recent results paint a very different picture. In the last five years, two winners have come from stall eight, one from seven, one from 15 and another from 18.

Do It Again won his first Durban July from gate 15, and the three to follow him over the line were all drawn high. When The Conglomerate beat Marinaresco in a thrilling running of the July in 2016, the first five to cross the line were drawn 18, 17, 14, 12 and 16. So maybe Snaith, and punters who’ve backed both Belgarion and Do It Again, has reason to be optimistic.

Rainbow Bridge splits Belgarion and Do It Again in the betting. However, after last year’s runner-up was drawn kindly in stall two, Eric Sands’ charge came in for significant support and has drawn even closer to Belgarion at the head of the betting. Another who’s been supported after a prosperous draw is Golden Ducat, who was backed into 17.0 from 23.0 after landing the plumb drawn in gate one.

Mike De Kock’s Soqrat has been supported in recent days, and he will come out of gate five. Shango, and champion jockey Lyle Hewitson, will come out of stall gate seven, while dual-Classic winning three-year-old, Got The Greenlight was the first to come out the hat and will start the Durban July from gate 13.
