The opening leg of South Africa's Triple Crown - which also features the Cape Town Met and the Durban July - takes place at Kenilworth this Saturday. This Grade One has been won by many of South Africa's most famous racehorses and 13 top milers have been confirmed for Saturday's renewal.

2024 L'Ormarins King's Plate Entries


The bookmakers have this year's King's Plate between two runners. Topping the market is beaten Durban July favourite See It Again, who's won both the Pinnacle and the Green Point Stakes this season.

Charles Dickens could only finish third behind See It Again when the two met in the Green Point. Candice Bass-Robinson was convinced her Guineas and Gold Challenge winner would come on plenty for the run and there isn't much separating Charles Dickens and See It Again in the market.

Al Muthana returns to defend his crown, having upset Charles Dickens to win this race 12 months ago. Justin Snaith will be represented by both Hluhluwe and Snow Pilot, who sit closest to the market leaders in the betting.

Luyolo Mxothwa and Brett Crawford team up with Anfields Rocket. Another Justin Snaith runner, Double Superlative will be ridden by Richard Fourie. Other runners include King Regent, Royal Aussie, Speed Machine, Countdown and Montein.

2024 L'Ormarins King's Plate Tips


See It Again got the better of CHARLES DICKENS (6/4) in the Green Point Stakes, and the bookies have last year's Durban July runner-up as the favourite to confirm that form on Saturday.

Charles Dickens was keen at the rear throughout the Green Point and Aldo Domeyer probably committed a little too soon, allowing the stronger stayer, See It Again to gain the upper hand late on. 

Candice Bass-Robinson is convinced that her stable star would improve for that outing. Charles Dickens thrashed See It Again when they met in the WSB Guineas back in May and there can be no doubt that he is better suited by this eight furlong trip. I wouldn't be at all surprised if those Green Point placings were reversed.

At an each-way price, I'll also take a chance on ANFIELDS ROCKET (50/1). This son of Coup de Grace won the Grade One SA Classic for Grant Maroun last season, before finishing a decent third in the Horse Chestnut Stakes. Having lost his way over the autumn, Anfields Rocket has been switched to Brett Crawford, whose stable is just down the road from Kenilworth racecourse. 

Crawford has decided to throw his recruit in at the deep end, but if the move has sparked a revival in form for Anfields Rocket, he could challenge for the minor places.

Verdict

Charles Dickens is our best bet in the 2024 L'Ormarins Kings Plate. We've also backed Anfields Rocket each-way at a lengthy price.
